What gets measured, gets managed

Our technology provides unprecedented visibility & granularity into energy usage data. Going forward, all VoltSafe products will be WiFi-enabled. Every time a device such as your block heater, laptop, fridge, or vehicle is powered through a VoltSafe power outlet or adapter, energy usage data is gathered and securely stored.

Conventional energy conservation solutions operate at the tenant-level, while new smart plugs, smart breakers, or smart meters attempt to infer more detailed energy usage. Without accurate data from devices or outlets, these products rely on the user to teach the algorithm – a behavioural change that cannot be expected from mainstream energy consumers.

VoltSafe products are the gateway for easy-to-collect device-level energy usage data. VoltSafe’s outlet-level energy data empowers eco-conscious home owners and sustainability professionals to assess and reduce power consumption in real-time. Furthermore, VoltSafe’s data provides the foundation for a whole ecosystem of sophisticated software products ranging from grid-level energy demand management and commercial utility cost control to Smart Homes and energy residential energy conservation initiatives.

 In short, VoltSafe shines the spotlight on wasted energy and removes a key hurdle to large-scale energy efficiency.

Eliminating tripping hazards, electric shocks, and arcing

Trips & Falls

Tripping over a power cord may seem trivial to many, but health & safety professionals know that it is a common source of injuries. Every year,¬†Canadian worker safety boards¬†record 42,000 lost-time injuries related to ‚Äėslips, trips, and falls‚Äô. Of those 42,000 incidents, only¬†one-third¬†involve falls from heights. As such, falls from no height, such as trips over electrical cords or slips on wet and frozen ground, are¬†some of the main factors¬†of workplace injuries. The Ontario Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) estimates that each injury results in health claims and¬†lost productivity¬†totalling $59,000 each.¬†

VoltSafe’s magnetic power connectors are designed to release quickly when pulled or torqued. While one might still stumble over a power cable, the quick-disconnect reduces the risk of falling. Obviously, electrical cords at home can also pose a tripping risk, especially for those with mobility issues such as the elderly. Fortunately, VoltSafe products can help reduce unnecessary sprains, concussions, or broken bones. 

Electric Shocks

Every year, 2000 US workers are injured and 150 are killed from exposure to electricity. Not surprisingly, the majority of these incidents occur in construction, maintenance, and around power lines. The¬†US National Fire Protection Association, however, notes that the proportion of incidents outside these two sectors has increased and has called for innovative approaches to electric safety training & technology. VoltSafe’s technology is a solution.

Electrical Fires & Confined Spaces

Electrical fires are the second leading cause of home fires in the US, contributing to a quarter of all structural fires and one-third of fire-related fatalities. The majority of these fires involve arcing from malfunctioning electrical devices, with the fatal share highest at night and in the winter. In the US alone, these fires result in 500 fatalities, 1,250 injuries and over US$1 billion in property damage.

VoltSafe technology eliminates the risk of arcing by completely embedding any live wire in the wall. This removes a key ignition source for fires in buildings, as well as in confined spaces such as oil & gas facilities.

Accessible Design

Seemingly trivial activities like connecting a block heater or plugging in a cord can be challenging for some people living with disabilities. In fact, one in four Americans live with physical limitations. Nearly one million people have a stroke every year in North America which is the leading cause of serious long-term disability. We have heard from amputees, veterans, paraplegics, people suffering from arthritis, those born with polymelia, seniors with walkers, individuals on crutches, and others that disconnecting from a conventional pronged power outlet can be difficult if not impossible.

We hope that wide-scale adoption of VoltSafe technology will contribute to more inclusive physical spaces and safer homes.
